30 watts/channel into 8 ohms the Audiopax Model 88 has a sonic signature
that is totally different from anything that I have ever heard before,
solid state or tubes. It’s very hard to describe because it
is not a combination of the best of both technologies. It is a new
proposition.
The micro detail retrieval happens in such a natural way that you
have to repeat dozens of times the same part of the music in order
to understand that the musical event that is being reproduced has
a different quality.
The Model 88 allows us to have this new look at our references and
it can, at the same time, keep all the warmth, the vividness, neutrality
and musicality, intact. All it needs is an excellent preamp (all
truly good amplifiers need this), good cabling (the more neutral
the better), a good source and loudspeakers with the same qualities
of the Model 88 and sensible enough to deliver its musical impetus.
The Model 88 played very well with all the speakers we tested them
with. Even the Dynaudio Countour 1.3 and the Elacs with only 86
and 87 db and loads of 4 and 6 ohms. This is another chararacteristic
of the Model 88. It has a very good compatibility with most cables
and speakers making it extremely hard to define what combination
is the best match.
It
is magisterial, like a “Midas” - everything that it
plays is transmuted into golden sounds. Even bad recordings can
have their moments of glory with the Model 88. I do not know how
this miracle is done, but it is not made with any perceptible coloration
in the middle/bass or because it is the classic tube sound.
Truly, the sensation is that the harmonic structure is refined in
such a way that the entire musical event is re invigorated and its
sonic signature totally recovered. Listening to it, you will have
a palpable and enchanting reprint of the music and its accompanying
silence.
I have just one concern. If you, my dear reader, can afford these
amplifiers, you will have trouble sleeping once you heard them.
You will feel like you have to have them.
